All of our courses are offered by PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors), the world's most popular and widely recognised provider of scuba diving certifications. To achieve a diving certification, you need to be able to swim 200 meters unaided, tread water for 10 minutes and be in good physical health.

Open Water/Junior Open Water
Suitable for those aged 10+ wishing to achieve a globally-recognised diving qualification. Children aged 10-14 can qualify for the PADI Junior Open Water and those aged 15+ for the full Open Water certification. The course is normally covered in 3-4 sessions, depending on number of participants and comprises of one classroom session and 2/3 Saturday afternoon swimming pool sessions. At this point you have several options. You can complete your 4 open water training dives with us during the summer at our beautiful freshwater location in the south west or you can book a holiday and complete your training dives abroad within one year.

What does the course involve?

1. Independent Learning/Classroom Time:
After reserving your place on our PADI Open Water course, we will supply you with course materials including the PADI Open Water Manual and DVD. There are 5 chapters to read independently, with corresponding sections on the DVD and a knowledge review to complete for each one. You will need to allow around 8-10 hours to achieve all of this. During the classroom session you will take part in quizzes to test your understanding of what you have learnt and have a chance to ask questions of your instructor before taking the exam.

2. Swimming Pool Training Sessions:
These will take place weekly in the comfort of a North Devon based heated indoor swimming pool. There are 2/3 sessions depending on how many people are doing the course. During these sessions you will experience the sheer thrill of breathing underwater and be taught basic diving skills, such as mask and regulator removal and recovery and practice the art of neutral buoyancy. You will also complete a 200m swim test and a 10 minute treadwater.

3. Open Water Training Dives:
And finally, to complete your qualification, you will take part in 4 open water training dives, to revise and practice the skills learnt during your swimming pool training sessions. The dives will take place from a freshwater location in the South West. Due to water temperatures, this will be offered June-September. Maximum depths are 12 meters for aged 10-11 and 18 meters for aged 12+.
